Bay of Kotor and the Old Town of Kotor

The "Bride of the Adriatic", as the Bay of Kotor is popularly called in the famous poem by Alekse Šantić, is a unique fjord in this part of Europe. It consists of the Bay of Kotor, Tivat, Herzegnov and Risan. There are 9 islands in it, and the most popular are Gospa od Škrpjela, Sveti Đorđe and Mamula. A specific combination of the coast, conifers and mountain peaks that seem to plunge into the sea, make this natural pearl one of the country's favorite and most visited tourist destinations.

The old town center of Kotor is surrounded by the walls of the fortress, inside which there are numerous perfectly preserved landmarks. Passing through the narrow streets and squares, you will enjoy seeing the medieval buildings that are rightfully on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The main city gate (Morska vrata) leads to the central Weapons Square, which is also the largest in Kotor. Here you can see the Prince's Palace, the Armory, the Napoleonic Theater and the City Watch Tower. The most popular is the Clock Tower from the 17th century, at the foot of which is the Pillar of Shame, on which convicts were once publicly punished.

One of the recognizable symbols of Kotor, the Cathedral of St. Tripun from the 12th century, is located on the square of the same name. In addition to it, we should also mention the churches of St. Luke, St. Nicholas, St. Mary Collegiate, St. Paul, St. Anna...

The ramparts of the city rise to the hill of St. Ivan, and at the very top, from the fortress of San Giovanni, which you can reach by steep stairs, you can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the entire bay.

Herceg Novi and Kanli Kula fortress

600 years ago, Herceg Novi was founded. Its rich history is reflected in the facades, roads, fortresses from the Turkish, Venetian, Spanish and Austrian periods, which still stand tall and mighty today! It is best to come during the Mimosa Festival. Join other people in this port city and celebrate the beginning of spring with them, with music, parades, flowers and food. As you know, mimosa is a yellow flower that blooms first in spring. Can you imagine how beautiful the city is then?

Kanli Tower is a monumental fortress in the Old Town, built in 1539 by the Turks and located at the northernmost point of the Old Town. Kanli kula means "bloody tower" and this notorious prison more than justified its name during the Turkish rule over Herceg Novi (1482-1687). In its current form, it is the work of Turkish builders and has preserved the architectural originality of that period to this day, but as other cultures gained control over the city, they all left their distinctive imprint on the tower, and so today we see traces of Venetian and Autro-Hungarian architecture on it. The tower is located 85 meters above sea level. Drawings of different types of galleys, crosses, dates and coats of arms can be seen on its walls. Today, the tower hosts various events, the Herzegnov Film Festival, Sunny Scales, Guitar Art Fest, Days of Music, pop and classical music concerts, folklore performances and many other events.

Perast and Our Lady of Škrpjela

Perast is an important and popular tourist center in Montenegro. Built by medieval rulers and wealthy Venetian sailors, the city consists of beautiful churches and palaces that are very well preserved. The most important among them are the Church of St. Nicholas, the Chapel of the Virgin, the Church of St. John the Baptist, the Church of St. Anna, the Church of St. Mark, the Church of St. Anthony and the Church of the Holy Virgin. There are also nine defensive towers in the city, the most important of which is the Holy Cross tower, which was built by the navy of the Venetian Republic in the 15th and 16th centuries. Perast, named after the Illyrian tribe Pirusta, is located near two small islands in the Bokelj Bay: the natural island of St. George, linked to numerous medieval legends, and the artificial Our Lady of Škrpjela, built at the end of the 15th century. Both islands, with their surreal picturesque appearance, are rich in stories and have fascinating attractions. The island of St. George, surrounded by solid stone walls and hidden by tall cypress trees, has a local cemetery where prominent locals are buried. The current appearance of the island dates back to the late 17th century.

One of the must-see excursions in Montenegro leads to the island of Gospa od Škrpjela, which "floats" in the middle of the Bay of Kotor. According to legend, for centuries, sailors threw stones into the sea after finding an icon of the Virgin and Child on a rock in the sea. In this way they created this small artificial island.

Did you know that in the Catholic church on the island, built by the Venetians in 1630, there is a tapestry embroidered by Jacinta Kunić, a native of Peraštan, from 1803 to 1828, i.e. for 25 years, waiting for her sailor husband to return home? The tapestry is unique because it is a unique work that she made from her own hair. Also, the church contains almost 70 works by Trip Kokolj, probably the most famous artist who comes from Perast.

It is also believed that he wrote his famous work, Don Quixote, right here, and named the girl Dulcinea after the city's name at the time, Dulcineum. On Slave Square there is a city museum, a small complex consisting of 3 buildings: a church-mosque from the 14th century, which contains numerous archaeological remains: Illyrian pottery, Greek and Illyrian ceramics, cathedral columns and Turkish tombstones; The Balšić Tower from the 12th century, used for art exhibitions, where the Jewish dissident and reformer of the Talmud, Sebataj Sebi, prayed in secret; in the third building there is an ethnographic collection, with an exhibition of items for hunting and fishing, as well as national costumes. The largest in a series of caves on this peninsula was created at the foot of a 30-meter-high cliff and is the result of the activity of sea waves over thousands of years on the porous rocks of Luštica.

The cave itself has two entrances, a smaller one on the south side and a larger one located in the southwest through which larger ships can enter. The area of the entire hall is about 300m², the depth of the sea inside the cave is up to 5m, and the maximum height of the ceiling is 9m. Skadar Lake National Park

Until 1858, the lake was just an enlarged pond, which people called Veliko Blato. That year, the Drim river dragged a large amount of sand and silt from the Albanian mountains into the mouth of the Bojana river, until the river bed itself did not move. This created the largest lake in the Balkans. Lake Skadar got its current name from the Albanian town that lies on its shore. The Montenegrin part of the lake was declared a national park in 1983 in order to preserve the rich nature of this area. This protected natural asset of incalculable importance covers 40,000 ha, of which 25,400 ha is water surface. The lake is filled with landscapes of extraordinary beauty and surrounded by ancient monasteries, churches and charming fishing villages - a land rich in history and centuries-old culture. The lake is of karst type, with many islands on which there are traces of the historical and cultural heritage of Montenegro. The shores of the lake are rich in numerous capes and bays, and overgrown with reeds, which give this National Park an authentic look.

Ostrog Monastery

The monastery is located along an almost vertical cliff, high on the Ostroška greda mountain, in the area between Danilovgrad and Nikšić. The monastery was built by Saint Vasilije Ostroski in 1665.

Saint Vasilije Ostroški was born as Stojan Jovanović in the village of Mrkonjići, Popovo polje, near Trebinje in Herzegovina to mother Ana-Anastasia and father Petar Jovanović, according to tradition on December 28, 1610.

The monastery is located at an altitude of 900 m above sea level, in a natural cave that was used as his hermitage by the monk and metropolitan of Zahum-Herzegovina Vasilije in the second half of the 17th century. Saint Vasilije Ostroski is considered a great miracle worker and healer. The noun "ostrog" is derived from the Old Slavonic "ostrog" - a fortification, i.e. established place.

The monastery complex consists of: Lower and Upper Ostrog monastery with a dormitory and library, as well as a newly built ritual church, auxiliary buildings and classrooms for students of the secondary theological school.

The upper monastery is located in a natural cave recess, and it consists of two small cave churches. The lower church was built on a plateau where there used to be a village church, built in 1824. It is dedicated to the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary from 1774. In 1965, Vasilije Ostroški dedicated the Hermitage Church or Upper Church to the Holy Cross. The Church of the Holy Cross was painted by master Radul, adapting the frescoes to the natural shape of the rocks. It houses the relics of the patron and healer Saint Vasilij Ostroški. Both were vividly painted in 1667. After the fire, from which the cave churches were spared, the Monastery was rebuilt in the period between 1923 and 1926.

The lower monastery with the church of the Holy Trinity from 1824, the inn and seminary from 1742. In this monastery complex, Metropolitan Vasilije Jovanović of Herzegovina was declared a saint after his death.

Morača Monastery

Morača Monastery is located in Montenegro in the municipality of Kolašin. It is located on the bank of the Morača River, after which it got its name, at an altitude of 300m. The place where it was built is a natural plain, from which a wonderful view of the Morača river canyon opens.

Nearby is the Svetigora waterfall, which flows into Morač, and such natural beauty gives the monastery a special charm.

The Morača Monastery has a very rich history, and since it was built during the early reign of Nemanjić, it witnessed many events. Stefan Vukanović Nemanjić, son of Vukan and grandson of Stefan Nemanja, is mentioned as the founder of the monastery. The monastery was built way back in 1252.

The entire monastery complex consists of two churches - the main church dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and another smaller church dedicated to Saint Nicholas. There is also an inn within the monastery complex. The Morača Monastery was built in the Raška style, while the main portal was made in the Romanesque style. The church is plastered, which in many ways distinguishes it from some coastal churches in Montenegro. The monastery complex is surrounded by high walls, on which there are two gates. Stefan Vukanović built the monastery from yellow stone. A small stream passes through the courtyard of the monastery, which then descends down the rocks and forms the marvelous Svetigora waterfall, which flows into Morača. Some Serbian monasteries, endowments of rulers such as Studenica, Žiča or Mileseva served as a model for Morača. The main church is 22.7 m long, 6.36 m wide, and the highest height (to the top of the cross) is 23 m. It is paved with gray marble. Probably the most beautiful architectural detail in the monastery is the double door at the entrance to the middle temple, which is partly made of ivory. The Church of Saint Nicholas is much smaller. It is only 6m high, while its length and width are about 5m.

The Morača Monastery is colorful, i.e. painted with icons.

Durmitor National Park

Durmitor is a mountain and a national park in Montenegro. The highest peak is Bobot's hip. 2,523 meters high. The name Durmitor is thought to come from the Celtic words "dru mi tore" meaning "water under the stone." The surroundings of Durmitor, a rare and authentic work of nature due to their beauty and unspoiled nature, were declared a National Park in 1952. Among the most beautiful decorations of the Park are the clear, powerful rivers that gave this area magnificent canyon valleys. The Tara river is particularly impressive, both with the beauty and movement of its waters, as well as with the depth and landscape of the canyon, making it one of the most beautiful in the world. Durmitor National Park abounds with a significant number of cultural monuments from the ancient period to the most recent era. The most characteristic are the medieval monuments: ruins of cities and fortifications, bridges and watchtowers, necropolises and monastery complexes in the Tara river valley. All the opulence of natural beauty, ambient and cultural values of Durmitor and the Tara River prevailed for Durmitor National Park to be included in the list of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. However, the beauty of the Durmitor massif is given special charm by 18 glacial lakes, called mountain eyes, at heights above 1500 m. The largest and most attractive is Black Lake. It is 2 km from the mountain town of Žabljak, the winter tourist center of Montenegro.

Seven areas of the Durmitor National Park are under a special protection regime and are specific: the spruce and fir rainforest in the Mlinsko potok basin, the black pine complex on Crni podi in the Tara canyon, the Black Lake with the forest in the immediate vicinity, the valley of the Škrčki jezera and the narrower area of the Sušice canyon , Barno lake with its surroundings, Zabojsko lake with its surroundings and the narrow canyon valley of the Tara river.

Biogradska Gora National Park

The municipality of Kolašinka is connected in the most beautiful way possible to its nearest neighbors, namely the municipalities of Andrijevica, Berane, Bijelo Polje and Mojkovac, by the National Park "Biogradska gora", which covers the central part of the Bjelasica mountain and stretches between the rivers Tara and Lim with an area of 5,400 hectares. There is also one of the three preserved rainforests in Europe with trees up to four centuries old, over 45 meters high, with the extent of glacial lakes, among which is Biogradsko, in the opinion of the world-renowned scientist Jovan Cvijić, "the most beautiful lake of the Balkan Peninsula", making more more attractive environment with a wealth of plant and animal life. Biogradska gora was declared a national park by law in 1952. The National Park includes 54 square kilometers of exceptional nature such as six amazing, clear glacial lakes, high mountain peaks and slopes, hundred-year-old forests, green pastures and fast, clear streams.

The reason why Biogradska Gora attracts many tourists from all over the world is, among other things, the enchanting glacial lakes. The most famous is Lake Biograd on the mountain Bjelasica, at 1094 meters above sea level. Lake Biograd is the largest mountain lake in Montenegro with a depth of 12 meters, a width of 261 meters and a length of 870 meters. Biograd Lake is filled by the Biograd River and periodic streams, making it one of the most beautiful glacial lakes in the area. The surface of the clear, Biograd lake shines with a blue-green color due to the surrounding forests. Many people come to visit this place to enjoy the idyllic landscape of the lake.

In addition to Biogradski, there are other glacial lakes, cirques and waves in the National Park Biogradksa gora that contribute to the unreal beauty of the National Park. In addition to Lake Biograd, there are beautiful glacial lakes such as: Ursulovacko, Pešica, Šisko, Mali Šisko and Ševarina.

Tara river canyon

Tara Canyon is one of the most fascinating sights in Europe, if not in the whole world. This turquoise blue streak of crystal clear water cuts through the northern edge of Durmitor National Park. The average depth of the canyon is 1073 meters, and the largest is 1333 meters. The deepest is near Obzir (1250-1300 m), and it is 60 km long. The canyon is an incredible wonder of nature that alone is enough of an invitation to explore for all adventure and nature lovers.

Also known as the "Tear of Europe", the Tara canyon is the longest canyon in Europe, and at the world level it is only behind the Grand Canyon. The Tara River is 158 km long, and has as many as 14 tributaries, as well as an incredible 69 rapids, so it is not surprising that it is the most popular destination for rafting in all of Montenegro. Another feature, or rather several features, which only contribute to its wild and untouched description are the waterfalls - as many as 40 of them, the most outstanding of which are Crna Vrela, Bijela Vrela, Đavolje Laži, Sokolovina and Bijeli Kamen.

In addition to the fact that it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful sights when it comes to the nature of Montenegro, the beauty of the Tara canyon is also recognized by the UNESCO organization. Back in 1977, the Tara canyon became part of the "Man and the Biosphere" program, thanks to its diverse flora and fauna.

Bridge on Đurđevića Tara

Another sight to remember, besides the canyon itself, is the elegant bridge on Đurđevica Tara, which stretches 172 m above the river. It was built in the period between 1983 and 1940 with the aim of connecting the two opposite sides of the canyon so that the most beautiful canyon - Tears of Europe - was "skipped" with five arches. According to the selection of the "Bright side" portal, it was declared among the 20 most beautiful in the world, while the British magazine "Times" included it in the Top 10 must-see attractions. Also, in 2019, the Microsoft company decided that the Windows Spotlight theme should be the very image of this bridge that adorns computers around the world.

The bridge is 365 m long and quite narrow, which did not prevent it from becoming one of the most beautiful bridges in the Balkans - so beautiful, in fact, that in some parts of Montenegro legends are still told today that fairies helped in the construction of the bridge. The Tara Bridge has always been a great inspiration to many artists, and its magnificent beauty has been admired even by world-renowned architects and engineers. This is supported by the fact that it is included in the list of the 10 most beautiful bridges on the planet.

Prokletije National Park

Prokletije is the largest mountain massif in the Balkans. They belong to the mountain range of the Dinarides and are their southernmost, highest and most impressive part. The area of Prokletije is administratively divided between Albania, Serbia - Kosovo and Montenegro. The Prokletija massif stretches between Lake Skadar and the Zeta Plain in the southwest, the Drim River in the east, Metohija and Mokra Gora in Metohija in the northeast, and Komovo in the West. Due to its imposing appearance and high sharp peaks, the term "Balkan Alps" is often used for Prokletije. Prokletije or in Albanian Bjeshket e Nemuna etymologically means "cursed mountains" which symbolizes the inaccessibility of this area. The first hiking expeditions to the "forbidden" mountains took place only 20 years ago, because the historical conditions up to that time in the area of Prokletije were such that it was dangerous and prohibited any access to the border area with Albania.

In 2009, Montenegro declared another national park on its territory - Prokletije National Park. This impressive mountain range rises above wide valleys, narrow river canyons and magical lakes, idyllic scenes of which it is not known which is more beautiful. However, Prokletije is still considered wild and often dangerous, which is greatly contributed by the fact that some parts of this mountain range are still unexplored. Prokletije National Park covers an area of 16,630 ha, which is adorned with large and small streams, clear sources of drinking and mineral water, rivers and underground water.

The Prokletije National Park is divided into several zones - Karanfilsko-Bjelicka, as the most rocky, with peaks that exceed 2000 m in height, then Vizitorska, Bogićevica zone, Bor and Kofiljaca zone and Stratačko-Zavojska zone. In each of them you can meet some form of glacial lakes, streams or springs, as well as incredible mountain lakes. Some of the lakes that really stand out for their beauty are Koljindarsko, Hridsko, Vizitorsko, Ropojansko, Tatarijasko, Bjelaj, Vezirova Brada and a small lake on Treskavac.

Hrid Lake is one of the lakes at the highest altitude in the country - 1970 m. However, if we talk about beauty, it is equal to Visitorski, which is located at a height of 1820 m and boasts an unusual floating grass islet.

Prokletije National Park can also boast of a very rich cultural heritage, as it teems with archaeological sites, fortresses, churches, mosques, settlements, burial sites, not to mention the less tangible grouping that constitutes cultural heritage, such as folklore, beliefs, customs and various ethnographic motifs.

Canyon Nevidio

Nevidio Canyon is a part of the Mala Komarnica river, which rises on the pedestal of the southern part of Durmitor, more precisely in Dobro Dol. Digging deep passes between Boljske Gredo (2091 m.a.s.l.) and Lojanik (2091 m.a.s.l.) to reappear in the quiet river valley as a permanent river. This area with two glacial lakes, the periodic Skakavica waterfall, the Komarnica nature reserve and other natural values makes the village of Pošćenje one of the most beautiful villages in Montenegro.

At the end of the valley, at an altitude of 935 m, the Nevidio canyon begins, or Neviđbog, as the inhabitants of this region still call it. Tucked away and hidden in inaccessible terrain, it has constantly attracted attention and curiosity, but there has been little organized effort to get to know and explore it. The first serious but unsuccessful attempts were made in 1957 and 1964. There were endless strange and fantastic stories about the last unconquered canyon in Europe. Until August 1965, when the members of P.S.D. "Javorak" from Nikšić, although with meager equipment, passed through the canyon and for the first time presented to the world this long-hidden, wild and amazing beauty.

The first contact with Nevidia is overshadowed by an indescribable beauty, unusual and strange to which a person is not used to. Most of the canyon is in eternal shadow. Because of the vertical rocks, the sun's rays cannot reach the bottom. The steep and inaccessible rocks have harsh conditions for vegetation, so that the canyon can be said to be a jewel of harsh nature.

Piva Monastery

The Piva Monastery is among the rare large buildings in the world, of large dimensions, which were transferred to another place. It was in 1982, due to the construction of the hydroelectric power plant on Piva. The relocation lasted 13 years, exactly as long as the construction of the monastery in the 16th century, from 1573 to 1586. The entire building, stone by stone, with 1,260 square meters of frescoes from the source of Piva, was moved a few kilometers away.
One points to the exceptional merits of Mehmed Pasha Sokolović in the restoration of the Patriarchate of Peć, so Piva is the only Orthodox church whose fresco depicts an Ottoman dignitary. One fresco says that it is really the grand vizier himself who is handing over the church to his blood relative - it is Savati Sokolović, who built this magnificent temple. By the way, Mehmed Pasha Sokolović was originally from these parts, the brotherhood of Sokolović, Gagović. As a child, he was taken to the then Ottoman state where he became a grand vizier. As an endowment to his region and the people from which he comes, he financed a bridge on the Drina in 1557, and in 1573 he was one of the founders of the Piva monastery.

The monastery treasury keeps relics of exceptional value - Savati's robes, gospels, Crnojević's psalter, and even Longinus' icons on a gold base. The inner wealth of the monastery in frescoes, icons, books and inscriptions on them, as well as in other things, simply contrasts with its simple external form. The frescoes next to the south door are undoubtedly related to the founders of the monastery. A standing figure in Turkish clothing is painted next to the founder Savati. Among the monastery's values are certainly the so-called the beautiful door in the middle temple, a masterpiece of medieval art. The iconostasis was made in three phases. First, three large icons of Longinus were created (1573/1574), then a large wood-carved cross with icons depicting the Virgin and St. James (1605) was created, and finally the icons made by Cosmas (1638/1639) . For a long time, the monastery was the center of the liberation movement in the region of Piva, as well as a cultural and educational center for a much wider area. During the 17th and 18th centuries there was a school there.

From south to north in one afternoon. Montenegro gives you the opportunity to feel its soul and authenticity in a short time. Montenegro is a small country with incredible diversity.
