Spring walks near the most beautiful waterfalls in Montenegro

Montenegro is a hidden gem for nature lovers, and one of the most beautiful natural wonders in our country are its waterfalls. With its stunning landscapes and rugged mountains, Montenegro offers some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Europe, attracting visitors from all over the world. The sound of water and the untouched freshness of nature are an integral part of every waterfall and turn them into fairy-tale scenes. It is no wonder that our ancestors believed that fairies once lived around the waterfall. The Cascades of Montenegro may not be as imposing as the world-famous Niagara Falls or Victoria Falls, but they still create exceptional places for a short, refreshing weekend vacation in Montenegro. The recommended time to visit the waterfalls is in the spring or early summer because that's when the water levels are high and the surrounding nature is the most lively during that period.

Niagara Falls - Rakića House - Niagara Falls are located just 4 kilometers from the center of Podgorica in a place called Rakića House. They were built 150 years ago for the needs of the mill where flour was once ground, and today they are an attraction that attracts tourists from all over the world. The canyon of the Cijevna river, where the waterfalls are located, is one of the most beautiful in Montenegro due to specific narrow passages, small crossings and sharp rocks. In some places it can be jumped over, while in some places its depth is even up to 20 meters. In addition to the waterfall, the entire stream of the emerald green Cijevna canyon is very interesting and is said to be very popular in the summer months. Unlike the real Niagara Falls, these falls often dry up, usually in August, so the best time to visit is spring or early summer. The Cijevna River rises in Prokletije, near Albania, so when the snow on the mountain tops melts in the spring, the river - and therefore the waterfall - swells. When the river dries up due to lack of snow and rain, that happens to Niagara Falls.

Grlja waterfall - is one of the most popular waterfalls in Montenegro. In the village of Vusanje below Prokletije, the Skakavica meets the Vusanje stream, and this is where Grlja originates, flowing through a sensational canyon. This wonder of nature was discovered in 1982, and today it represents the ultimate challenge for the most experienced. The waterfall is fed by water from an amazing natural spring, the Eye of the Locust, and freshly melted snow from the surrounding Cursed Mountains. The water plunges about 12 meters into a deep canyon, then joins the water from Ali Pasha's spring and flows into Lake Plav. This waterfall is a display of the pure power of nature. In late spring and early summer, the waterfall is absolutely gushing from the melting snow. This is one of the most incredible displays of the power of nature. In early autumn, the waterfall loses its power, but it is still a beautiful s

Crnjak Waterfall - is one of the natural jewels of Montenegro. It is located in the village of Bijela (Gornja), on the river of the same name. The waterfall is ten kilometers from Šavnik and forty kilometers from Nikšić and leaves no one indifferent, and it is difficult to describe in words. The village used to be called Crna. Tradition says that when the Morača monastery was built, in the 13th century, no waterworks in Montenegro could work because there had been a drought for several years. Only this stream water mill built by the Vulovićs and also called Crnjak worked, as well as the waterfall. And so, the flour ground in the Crnjak mill, white as snow, reaches the Morača monastery. When the monks found out that the flour was ground in the village of Crna, they allegedly said: "By God, this is not Black, but White". And the village, rightly, got the name Bijela. But that's why the mill and the waterfall kept the name Crnjak. Although, if you ignore the negative symbolism of the color black and take into account only the positive - strength, elegance, mystery - perhaps it is not by chance that the waterfall was given such a name. The waterfall is a few hundred meters away from the source of the Bijela River, and the water separates over the rock into two branches, the left of which passes right through the aforementioned mill. Or, rather, his remains. The locals say that the mill, which the ravages of time have long since taken under its wing, deserves to be restored and protected so that it can continue to tell, to those who want to hear, about the old times and the history of the Drobnja region, and that, together with the waterfall, it captivates with its beauty and with pride.

Vrtiljak Waterfall - is another mystical place that shows the beauty of the wild nature of Montenegro. It is located in the village of Turčini, which is located in the hinterland of Bar. With its natural beauty and attractiveness, it has attracted more and more attention from tourists in recent years. The special charm of this place is that you can reach it on foot from Stari Bar and enjoy the untouched nature along the way. In Turčini, staff like from a fairy tale are waiting for you. This is a place that leaves no one indifferent. The greenery and the shade it creates are certainly a hiding place from hot summer days, when many choose to swim in the icy water at the waterfall instead of the beach and the sea. A swing is attached to the top of a large tree above it, which makes "flying over the waterfall" unreal.

Skakavac waterfall - is located above the eastern side of the village of the same name, about a kilometer away from the main road Berane - Bijelo Polje. The waterfall is created from clear water that comes from nearby caves and flows further down the ridge and rocks towards the village and flows into the river Lim. There are also three interesting caves that rise above the waterfall. The caves are full of cave corridors and decorations, so they are very attractive. The whole experience is completed by the diverse forest that stretches above and below the waterfall. All this indicates that this locality deserves full attention.

Banjevac Waterfall - is an untouched pearl of nature located in the village of Banjevac, near the Berane-Kolašin regional road, and seven kilometers from the center of Berane. The height of the falls is about 20 meters. The path leading to the waterfall is not demanding and is suitable for walking.

Skakavica waterfall - located on the river Grabovica, which flows into Komarnica, known for its wonderful Nevidio canyon. Nevidio Canyon is about 2 km long. The entrance is located at 935 m, and the exit at 810 m above sea level. The unrepeatable beauty of the straits, cascades and sparkling beeches preserved by the Nevidio canyon is reason enough to visit this incredible jewel of Montenegro. The area around the entrance is one of the most beautiful areas in the Durmitor area. The beauty of this region is the village of Pošćenje with its two glacial lakes, the periodic Skakavica waterfall, which scatters the water of Grabovica, which flows into Komarnica, from a seventy-meter high rock. The waterfall dries up during the summer, so, like most other waterfalls, it is ideal to visit it in the spring.

Waterfall on Captain's lake - Located at a height of 1678 meters, Captain's lake is a place where you can feel the pulse of nature and see how the mountains are reflected in the crystal clear water. After the winter snows, a small waterfall is activated near the Captain's lake, which gives this unreal natural beauty a special charm. As with other spring walks, "timing" is very important for this one. The ideal time is the second half of May and June, because then the entire area around the trail is covered with a variety of wildflowers, especially wild daffodils. From a distance, it's getting so white that you might think it hasn't snowed yet. Anyone who visits Captain's Lake and its waterfall during the mentioned period has the opportunity to rest their eyes in the scenes of untouched nature and enjoy this incredible corner of the Montenegrin mountains that surround it.

Skakala waterfall - is located a few hundred meters from the source of the river Lještanica. It is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Montenegro. Lještanica is a river in the Vraneška valley. The right is a tributary of the river Ljuboviđa. It is 4.8 km long. In the continuation of the Skakala waterfall, there are more than 20 smaller pools and waterfalls. There are large deposits of siga stone (bigara) in the entire area, so the appearance of the waterfall is probably a consequence of the specific geomorphological structure. The Skalala waterfall is reminiscent of the Gostilje waterfall on Zlatibor or the Lisine waterfall in eastern Serbia in terms of its attractiveness. The proximity of the Novaković Cave and the Zlateš Monastery present this whole with great potential for rural tourism.

Svetigora Waterfall - Did you know that at the foot of the medieval Morača Monastery is the Svetigora Waterfall? The monastery was built in 1252 in the Middle Ages, and its founder was Prince Stefan from the Nemanjić dynasty. According to legend, Prince Stefan, watching this very waterfall one night, saw a burning candle and, taking it as a sign from God, decided to build a large monastery on that spot. The waterfall is located below the Morača monastery. It is created by a nearby stream that flows into the Morača river. The stream bubbling in front of the walls of the sacred treasure of the Kolašina region creates an impressive landscape of the Svetigora waterfall, which, like an optical illusion, creates the impression for a large number of drivers from the direction of Podgorica that the Morača Monastery is floating above the river of the same name, at 300 meters above sea level.
