Bosnia and Herzegovina sometimes often known informally as Bosnia, is a country at the crossroads of south and southeast Europe, located in the Balkans. The capital and largest city is Sarajevo. Bosnia and Herzegovina borders Serbia to the east, Montenegro to the southeast, and Croatia to the north and southwest. Bosnia, which is the inland region of the country, has a moderate continental climate with hot summers and cold, snowy winters. In the central and eastern regions of the country, the geography is mountainous, in the northwest it is moderately hilly, and in the northeast it is predominantly flat. Herzegovina, which is the smaller, southern region of the country, has a Mediterranean climate and is mostly mountainous.
We will start our journey through Bosnia and Herzegovina with a visit to its capital - Sarajevo.
Our guide and driver will be waiting for you at the airport at the agreed time, with whom you will spend the next 7 days, and who will take you to the hotel where you will be accommodated for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast until 9 am, we will go on a city tour to hear a lot of interesting things about the city and see the most important monuments in the Old Town of Sarajevo. We will see the old Orthodox Church which is part of the Sarajevo Pilgrimage. We go to the most recognizable landmark of Sarajevo - Sebilj, where there is a wooden fountain Baščaršija Square. You will find the oldest street in Sarajevo with many amazing works of art. Our next stop would be Sarajevo City Hall - the most beautiful building from the Austro-Hungarian era. In 1949, the building became the National Library. Expect to find the largest and one of the most beautiful mosques in Sarajevo known as the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque. Near the most beautiful mosque in Europe, there is a unique Clock Tower known for showing completely unusual times for the 20th century. We will see the oldest Jewish synagogue in our city. The city tour of Sarajevo continues in the direction of the modern part of Sarajevo, where you will also find a completely different architectural style typical of the Habsburg Monarchy. The tour of the city ends next to the famous Latin Bridge, the place of the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, after which we return to Baščaršija where we will have the famous Sarajevo kebabs for lunch, a traditional dish for which the ring is very famous :)
After lunch until 2 pm, we will head to another very interesting location, mountain Trebević, which is impossible not to notice while staying in Sarajevo. The way we will get to Trebević is very interesting and that is the Trebević cable car. During the ascent by cable car to Trebević, you will enjoy fantastic views of Sarajevo, and drinking coffee at 1160 meters above sea level is a great reason to go.
After Trebević, we go to the town of Foča, where we will have dinner and overnight. In short, Foca is the unofficial capital of active holidays in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The largest peaks of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the strongest rafting in Europe, numerous lakes, one of the last rainforests are just part of the rich offer of this area. Since the winters here are harsh, and these localities are inaccessible, it is best to visit Foča in the form of an active vacation during the summer season from May to October. In February, Foča will be covered with snow, so in addition to the city tour, we will also visit the Sand Pyramids and the Oteš waterfall.
After breakfast, around 9 am, we will start the realization of the city tour within which we will visit the Aladža mosque. This historical monument dates back to the 16th century, and thanks to its architectural style dominated by geometric and floral decorations, it is also known as the “colorful mosqu”. We will continue the city tour in the park across the street, since the largest Orthodox church in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Church of Saint Sava, is located on his land. Around 12 o’clock, we will visit the city museum, “Museum of Old Herzegovina” where we will have a short historical lecture on the rich history of the city on two rivers dating back to the Neolithic.
After lunch in the ethno restaurant, around 2 pm we will head to the Sand Pyramids. Since they are caused by soil erosion, as well as the influence of weather conditions, wind, cold and heat will be less than the second time you visit them.
The sand pyramids are a masterpiece of nature and a rare phenomenon, and in the world they can be found only in Colorado, the Dolomites in Italy and Devil's Town in Serbia.
The only good thing considering the time of your arrival is the Oteš waterfall, which is active during the winter and spring, so we will visit it after the pyramids.
As for dinner and overnight stays, they will be organized in an unusual place, built on the oasis of the river Ćehotina.
After breakfast, we continue our adventure to the south, more precisely to the city of Trebinje. After 3 hours of driving, we come to Trebinje, which is located near the Adriatic Sea (25 km away from the sea), and which is covered with the sun for most of the year. The combination of Mediterranean and continental climate simply invites you to drink coffee under the old plane trees and rest before the realization of the daily plan. The abundance of stone, preserved old town and various architectural directions indcate that we are in a place of rich history that remembers many civilizations such as the Illyrians, Greeks, Romans..., and the best place to open historical themes is the museum.
After coffee, we will also walk through the old town to the Museum of Herzegovina, which contains many valuable exhibits and is one of the most beautiful in our country.
After the museum, we take a lunch break, so we will head to one of the restaurants overlooking the largest sinkhole in Europe, the river Trebisnjica, which is 98 km long. We will use the second part of the day to visit the hill Crkvina, where one of the most visited buildings in eastern Herzegovina is located, and where Jovan Dučić found his eternal home. A poet and a diplomat, and above all a great man from Trebinje, whose wish to be buried on one of the hills surrounding Trebinje was fulfilled in this way. From the beautiful lookout point there is a view of the whole city, and past the urban part you can see vineyards, and the wine from this area has a high rating. Along with wine, homemade cheese and prosciutto that is air-dried are served in this area, so we will spend dinner exploring these delicacies:).
After breakfast until 8 am, we continue our adventure. Two hours from Trebinje is the historic town of Pocitelj, built by King Tvrtko I Kotromanic in the 13th century. The importance of this place is best shown by the fact that it is on the UNESCO list of world monuments. During the tour of the old town, we will visit the house of Gavrankapetanović, which was one of the first art colonies in Southeast Europe, then Hamam (Turkish bath) built next to Ham, which is also an integral part of this historic place. On the way to Mostar, which is our ultimate goal for this day, we visit the town of Blagaj, where the source of the river Buna is located. This old town (Blagaj) was built during the Roman Empire, when it was essentially a fortress. The most famous part is Tekija, where dervishes glorified God. After visiting Tekija, we will stop by for lunch with some of the best fish specialties in the country that are served right here.
We continue our journey towards Mostar where we will have dinner and spend the night in one of the hotels.
The city itself is named after the guardians of the bridges, “mostari”, which clearly indicates that everything in Mostar revolves around the bridge. Immediately after breakfast, we go to see for ourselves what it’s all about. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was built in 1566. The fact that his architect, Hajrudin, left Mostar just before the bridge began to be used is perhaps the best indication of what kind of endeavor it was at that time, all in fear that his building would not last.
We are slowly moving away from the bridge with the cobblestones from the middle of the 16th century that lead us to the cradle of Mostar, which is Kujundžiluk. There used to be about 500 craft workshops here. Today, this is the most visited street in Mostar, which still exudes the spirit of the old one.
As another important architectural monument, we will single out the oldest house in Mostar. The house was built in 1520 from stone and wood and has proudly preserved the tradition of the Kajtaz family for 500 years.
As lunch time approaches, we return to the Old Bridge where we will enjoy the view once again while waiting for lunch with good homemade coffee.
After lunch we continue our journey towards Konjic. Since there were a large number of secret projects in the former Yugoslavia, to which Bosnia and Herzegovina itself belonged, it is time to visit one of them, which is one of the most closely guarded secrets of the former state, the “Atomic War Command” facility or popularly known as “Tito’s bunker”. It was built in the strictest secrecy for a full 26 years, and 4.6 billion US dollars were spent on construction, which would amount to about 10 billion dollars in today’s equivalent. The interior and equipment have been preserved so this tour will be very interesting.
We will use the evening hours to have a few more drinks with dinner and to summarize everything we went through together. We have dinner and overnight at the hotel in Konjic.
After breakfast we go to Sarajevo, more precisely to the airport where your arrangement ends.
